Being only a 2 hour drive away from Leeuwarden, in 2017 I also visited Wittmund air base, in conjunction with my visit to Frisian Flag and EART. Previously a phantom base, this Air Base is now host to the Tactical Wing 71 of the German Air Force, flying the Eurofighter Typhoon.
On this occasion I was not only looking to capture photos of German Eurofighters operating from Wittmundhafen, but mainly to see the McDonnell Douglas A-4N Skyhawk II operate as adversaries for the based typhoons of the German Air Force. At Wittmund, there are around 7 of these aircraft operated by Discovery Air Defence Services. This company operates the most advanced A-4N fleet in the world, and deliver live Combat Airborne training in challenging environments worldwide.
During my day visit, I was able to capture two A-4N Skyhawk aircraft take off and land in the afternoon, as well as several German air force typhoons that took off throughout the day, some even carrying live weapons. In addition, we were treated to a touch and go by a German Air Force C-160 Transall in the morning, as well as a low approach by the first built H145-T2 in offshore-configuration. A summary of my visit can be viewed in the images below.
