On 6 June 2026, I also attended the Open Day at Cervia Air Base, home of the Italian Air Force’s 15° Stormo, one of the nation’s most important search and rescue units. The event provided a fascinating opportunity to explore the capabilities of the wing and its crews, whose HH-139B helicopters stand ready around the clock to conduct search and rescue missions across Italy.
Visitors were able to view aircraft up close, experience flight simulators, and watch live demonstrations showcasing the demanding work carried out by the men and women of the 15° Stormo. Coming only weeks after the 100th anniversary celebrations of the 83° Centro SAR, the event highlighted both the proud heritage and the vital operational role of Cervia’s rescue force, which continues to save lives both at home and abroad.
