At the northern edge of Sacramento sits a former military installation that has become one of the most important aerial firefighting centers in the world. Sacramento McClellan Airport, once home to McClellan Air Force Base, now serves as the operational heart of CAL FIRE’s aviation program — a place where helicopters, airtankers, tactical aircraft, pilots, mechanics, and firefighters converge in a nonstop battle against California’s increasingly destructive wildfire seasons. The airport is more than simply a base of operations; it is the nerve center of an aerial firefighting system designed around one principle: rapid initial attack. From McClellan, aircraft can launch within minutes toward fires burning in forests, mountains, grasslands, and communities across the state.

The aircraft stationed at McClellan represent decades of evolution in aerial firefighting. Some began life as military aircraft during the Cold War and Vietnam era before being transformed into specialized firefighting machines. Others represent a new generation of purpose-built technology designed specifically for modern wildfire suppression. Together, they form one of the largest and most experienced civil firefighting aviation fleets on Earth.
The Grumman S-2T Airtanker: Backbone of Initial Attack
Among the most recognizable aircraft operating through McClellan is the Grumman S-2T airtanker, an airplane that has become synonymous with CAL FIRE itself. Originally designed for the U.S. Navy as the S-2 Tracker anti-submarine warfare aircraft, the airframe was later converted into a firefighting platform capable of carrying roughly 1,200 gallons of retardant. The original piston engines were replaced with more powerful turboprop engines, giving rise to the “T” designation in S-2T. The result was an aircraft uniquely suited to California’s rugged terrain i.e., fast enough to respond quickly, maneuverable enough to operate in steep canyons, and durable enough to withstand the punishing conditions of wildfire operations.

The S-2T became the backbone of CAL FIRE’s initial attack doctrine. When a wildfire is first reported, these airtankers are often among the first fixed-wing aircraft overhead. Their mission is not necessarily to extinguish a fire outright, but to slow its spread by laying down lines of red retardant ahead of advancing flames. The arrival of the C-130 represented a major transformation in CAL FIRE’s aerial capabilities. Acquired from the U.S. Coast Guard and converted into firefighting aircraft, the four-engine turboprop Hercules dramatically expands the amount of retardant the agency can deliver during major wildfire incidents. The OV-10 Bronco: The Eyes in the Sky
Equally important to wildfire operations are the aircraft that coordinate the aerial battle itself. The OV-10 Bronco serves in this role as CAL FIRE’s airborne tactical command aircraft. With its twin-boom design and expansive cockpit visibility, the OV-10 was originally developed for military observation and counterinsurgency missions during the Vietnam War. In CAL FIRE service, however, the Bronco functions as an aerial command platform that directs the movements of airtankers and helicopters over active fires.
Inside the aircraft, the pilot and Air Tactical Group Supervisor coordinate the entire aerial firefighting environment. The Super Huey: A Firefighting Workhorse
Rotary-wing aviation is equally critical to CAL FIRE’s mission, and McClellan supports a substantial helicopter operation that includes both legacy aircraft and modern heavy-lift platforms. For decades, the Bell UH-1H “Super Huey” has been one of the agency’s defining helicopters. Derived from the iconic Huey helicopter used extensively during the Vietnam War, CAL FIRE’s versions have been modernized with upgraded engines, avionics, and firefighting systems. Despite the aircraft’s age, the Huey remains exceptionally capable in California’s demanding terrain.
The Super Huey is valued for its versatility. It can transport helitack firefighters into remote mountain areas, perform medical evacuations, conduct reconnaissance missions, and drop water directly onto active fire fronts. Carrying roughly 360 gallons of water, the helicopter is agile enough to operate in tight canyons and rugged forest environments where fixed-wing aircraft may struggle to maneuver.
During fast-moving fires, Hueys can rapidly insert crews into isolated locations that would otherwise be inaccessible by road. Their role is often as much about moving firefighters and equipment as it is about suppressing flames directly. Even as newer aircraft enter service, the Super Huey continues to play a vital role in CAL FIRE operations throughout the state.

The FIREHAWK: The Next Generation of Aerial Firefighting
In recent years, CAL FIRE has begun transitioning toward a more advanced helicopter fleet centered around the Sikorsky S-70i FIREHAWK. Based on the military Black Hawk platform, the FIREHAWK represents the next generation of aerial firefighting helicopters. These aircraft are significantly larger and more powerful than the Hueys they supplement, capable of carrying approximately 1,000 gallons of water while also transporting crews, conducting rescue operations, and supporting night firefighting missions.
The FIREHAWK’s advanced avionics, increased payload capacity, and superior high-altitude performance make it especially valuable during California’s modern megafires, which frequently burn in extreme weather conditions and inaccessible terrain. McClellan has increasingly become central to the integration, maintenance, and operational deployment of the FIREHAWK fleet as CAL FIRE modernizes its aviation infrastructure.
One of the FIREHAWK’s greatest advantages is its operational flexibility. The helicopter can refill rapidly from lakes, reservoirs, and portable water sources while maintaining a relentless pace during active firefighting operations. It also possesses rescue and hoist capabilities that allow it to support emergency response missions beyond wildfire suppression.



















The King Air Fleet: Tactical Coordination and Utility Operations
Another important but often less publicly visible component of CAL FIRE’s aviation operations at McClellan is the Beechcraft King Air fleet. Aircraft such as N461DF play a critical supporting role in the agency’s broader aerial firefighting mission, particularly in aerial supervision, personnel transport, reconnaissance, and administrative operations. Unlike the airtankers and helicopters that directly attack fires, the King Air serves as a highly flexible multi-mission platform capable of moving rapidly across California while supporting command-and-control functions behind the scenes. Its twin-turboprop design provides excellent reliability, speed, and endurance, making it ideally suited for statewide operations that may require quick deployment between incidents, bases, and command centers.
The King Air’s versatility has made it a valuable asset within CAL FIRE aviation. During wildfire incidents, these aircraft may be used for aerial observation, coordination support, mapping missions, and transportation of fire personnel and agency leadership. Their sophisticated avionics and stable flight characteristics also make them effective platforms for communications and logistical support during large multi-agency operations. Aircraft like N461DF are frequently seen moving between McClellan and other CAL FIRE aviation facilities throughout the state, reflecting the airport’s role as the organizational hub of the agency’s air operations network.
At McClellan, the King Air fleet benefits from the same extensive maintenance infrastructure and operational support systems that sustain CAL FIRE’s larger firefighting aircraft. While they may not carry retardant or water, these aircraft contribute significantly to the efficiency and coordination of California’s aerial firefighting strategy, ensuring that command staff, tactical supervisors, and support personnel can respond rapidly wherever major incidents emerge.



McClellan’s Expanding Role in Modern Wildfire Warfare
What makes McClellan unique is not merely the variety of aircraft stationed there, but the way the facility integrates every aspect of aerial firefighting into a single operational ecosystem. Pilots train there. Aircraft are repaired and overhauled there. Tactical coordination is managed there. During major wildfire outbreaks, aircraft launch continuously from McClellan in near-round-the-clock operations, sometimes supporting multiple fires simultaneously across Northern California. The airport’s military heritage provides extensive runway infrastructure, maintenance hangars, logistics facilities, and operational space ideally suited for large-scale aviation operations.

As California’s wildfire seasons grow longer and more destructive, the role of McClellan and the aircraft operating from it has become increasingly significant. What was once a former Air Force base has evolved into one of the most sophisticated aerial firefighting centers in existence. From aging military veterans like the OV-10 Bronco and Super Huey to modern firefighting platforms like the C-130 Hercules and FIREHAWK, the aircraft of CAL FIRE represent a fusion of aviation history, technological adaptation, and operational necessity.
