Inside the Winter Mountain Flying of Austria’s Helicopter Squadrons
Every winter, when the Alps harden into a frozen labyrinth of ridges and valleys, the helicopter crews of the Austrian Air Force turn toward the mountains instead of away from them. Snowstorms replace clear skies. Thin air replaces easy lift. Alpine meadows become precision landing zones for aircraft weighing several tons. This annual ritual is known as the Hochgebirgslandelehrgang i.e., the High-Mountain Landing Course. It stands as one of the most demanding rotary-wing training programs in Europe. It is not conducted for spectacle, but for necessity. Austria’s geography dictates its doctrine: whenever avalanches strike, villages are isolated, or climbers are injured above the tree line, helicopters are often the only means of rescue and transport.
Winter, therefore, is not an obstacle. It is the classroom and transforms familiar mountains into deceptive terrain. Snow erases contrast. Clouds cling to ridges. Wind funnels through valleys like invisible rivers. Pilots learn to “read” the mountains — watching snow plumes on peaks, studying cloud movement, and judging where turbulence hides. Moreover, landings are rarely flat. Often they occur on slopes, ridgelines, or frozen clearings barely larger than the rotor diameter. Every maneuver is calculated. Every decision shared between pilot and crew. In addition, environmental responsibility is woven into the program. Routes avoid wildlife habitats, and noise corridors are respected even during tactical training. The Alps are not merely training grounds; they are protected national heritage.

Bases at the Edge of the Alps
Training begins from a network of strategically placed helicopter bases that anchor operations on the edge of alpine terrain. The heart of winter mountain flying is Aigen im Ennstal Air Base (LOXA), nestled between towering ranges in Styria. From here, helicopters launch day and night operations directly into steep valleys and snow-covered plateaus within minutes of takeoff. Supporting this hub are several major bases across the country, including:
- Langenlebarn Air Base – training and command
- Hörsching Air Base – transport and logistics
- Zeltweg Air Base – air operations coordination
- Klagenfurt Air Base – southern alpine coverage
From these locations, helicopter squadrons converge into composite training detachments, mixing experienced mountain instructors with younger pilots earning their alpine qualifications.
Rather than using a single mountain range, the Austrian Air Force treats the Alps as a vast open-air flight simulator. Each region offers unique meteorological and terrain challenges and each training zone is selected for specific skills: wind management, altitude performance, confined-area landings, and emergency access routes. The key mountain ranges used for testing include the following, also depicted in the schematic map hereunder.
- Ennstal Alps – precision snow landings
- Totes Gebirge – wind corridor training
- Hohe Tauern – glacier operations above 3,000 m
- Ötztal Alps – hover landings on ridges
- Gurktal Alps – narrow valley navigation
- Karnische Alpen – sudden weather shift zones.

All four helicopter types within the Austrian Air Force form the backbone of winter training, each with a distinct role.
The modern AW-169 represents Austria’s newest capability. Its digital cockpit and high-performance engines make it ideal for precision navigation and complex alpine maneuvers. Under a Government-to-Government agreement with Italy’s Leonardo, Austria has ordered a total of 36 AW-169 light utility helicopters to progressively replace its ageing Alouette III fleet, with deliveries scheduled to complete by 2028.
The fleet is configured in two main variants: 12 AW-169B trainer/multi-mission helicopters and 24 AW-169MA armed/tactical versions, all tailored to Austrian requirements including modern avionics and mission systems. The first AW169B, serial 5M-IA, was handed over in December 2022 at what is now Figl Air Base near Tulln/Wien, which serves as the headquarters for the Luftunterstützungsgeschwader (Air Support Wing) and houses AW-169B flight training elements alongside other helicopter and fixed-wing units.
In service the AW169 “Lion” performs a broad spectrum of tasks: troop and equipment transport, tactical support and armed operations, disaster relief and emergency response, mountain rescue, firefighting and medical evacuation. A secondary stationing point for the fleet is Aigen/Ennstal, where some MA-configured helicopters are based to support regional operations. This flexible, twin-engine rotorcraft represents a significant leap in capability and versatility for the Austrian Air Force, combining modern utility with multirole mission readiness across both military and civil support roles.












The heavy lifter is the S-70 Black Hawk, which trains for disaster relief, troop transport, and medical evacuation in deep snow terrain. The Austrian Air Force’s Sikorsky S-70 Black Hawk fleet has been a cornerstone of the Bundesheer’s medium helicopter capability since the first examples entered service in 2002, marking over two decades of versatile operations across military, disaster relief, and domestic support missions. Initially procured as nine S-70A-42 Black Hawks, these twin-engine, multi-purpose helicopters are also based with the Mittlere Transporthubschrauberstaffel of the Luftunterstützungsgeschwader (Air Support Wing) at Figl Air Base, in Langenlebarn near Tulln.
Throughout their service life the S-70 Black Hawks have been modernised with updated avionics and mission systems, with three already upgraded and further aircraft undergoing enhancement as part of a wider fleet refresh, and three additional second-hand S-70s acquired to expand the unit toward a 12 aircraft squadron by around 2025. Beyond internal transport, personnel movement and cargo lifts, these helicopters are regularly deployed for high-mountain operations, disaster relief, flood and wildfire support, and other national assistance missions, demonstrating their adaptability in austere and challenging conditions. In a significant modernization step, Austria has also ordered 12 new UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters under a 2024 Foreign Military Sales contract, which will both augment and ultimately help replace older types like the AB 212 and further strengthen the Bundesheer’s helicopter capabilities from 2028 onward.









The veteran Agusta Bell AB-212 remains indispensable for instruction, valued for its stability and responsiveness in confined mountain spaces. The Austrian Air Force’s Agusta Bell AB-212 has been the workhorse of the Bundesheer’s helicopter fleet for over four decades, providing essential medium-lift capability across a broad range of military and civil support missions. First delivered in 1980, Austria received 24 AB-212 helicopters license-built by Agusta to serve as the backbone of its light/medium transport helicopter force, with 22 remaining in service into the mid-2020s after losses and retirements.
This twin-engine, 14-seat rotorcraft has been organized into two Light Transport Helicopter Squadrons (Leichte Transporthubschrauberstaffel) under Fliegerregiment 3, both based at Fliegerhorst Vogler in Linz/Hörsching, where they operate alongside other Army aviation units. The AB-212 has been regularly deployed for troop and cargo transport, high-mountain operations, external load work, medevac missions, and domestic assistance roles such as forest fire water-bomber support and disaster relief.
Over the years the fleet underwent significant modernization, including avionics upgrades in the early 2010s extending its service life and improving capability. By the mid-2020s, these helicopters had collectively logged well over 100 000 flight hours in Austrian service, reflecting high operational tempo across both military tasks and support to civilian authorities. As described previosuly, the AB-212’s role is slowly beginning to transition to the newer UH-60M Black Hawk, with deliveries beginning from 2028 as the Bundesheer continues to modernize its medium helicopter fleet.
















Finally, the Bell OH-58 Kiowa was used to scout routes, observe weather patterns, and guide the larger helicopters to safe landing zones in whiteout conditions. The Austrian Air Force’s Bell OH-58 Kiowa has served as the Bundesheer’s primary light scout and armed observation helicopter for nearly five decades, forming a unique and enduring part of its rotary-wing fleet. Introduced in 1976, Austria acquired 12 Bell OH-58B Kiowa helicopters (the export version of the iconic Bell 206) specifically configured for armed reconnaissance, liaison, observation and light utility roles.
These single-engine helicopters, capable of carrying a 7.62 mm M134 mini-gun for armed escort and support tasks, have been operated under the Luftunterstützungsgeschwader (Air Support Wing) with a light utility/multi-role helicopter squadron based at Figl Air Base near Langenlebarn. Throughout their Austrian service they have conducted armed reconnaissance missions, battlefield support, border surveillance and aerial observation tasks, often flying with electro-optical sensors and searchlights in addition to their light armament. Of the original dozen delivered in 1976, 10 remain operational today following the loss of two airframes in accidents in 1992 and 2014. While the Kiowa has been the Austrian Air Force’s only dedicated armed helicopter type, plans are in place to eventually replace it with armed variants of the newer AW-169 fleet by the end of this decade, marking the close of an era for the venerable light scout helicopter that has been in service for nearly half a century.















All together throughout the winter flying exercise, these four helicopter aircraft operated both individually and in mixed formations, mirroring real emergency and military missions.
Winter Flying Course – Timeline
Week 1 – Ground and Weather Mastery focuses on building the theoretical foundation required for safe mountain aviation. Crews study alpine meteorology in depth, learning to interpret rapidly changing wind patterns, foehn effects, and cloud formations unique to mountainous terrain. Avalanche awareness training introduces terrain assessment, snowpack behavior, and risk mitigation procedures critical for rescue and supply missions. Aircraft performance in thin air is analyzed through weight-and-balance calculations and power-margin planning, while environmental protection rules emphasize operating responsibly in protected alpine regions and minimizing rotor wash damage to fragile winter landscapes.
Week 2 – Basic Mountain Flying transitions crews from theory into practical flight operations. Pilots practice ridge approaches and departures, mastering angle control and energy management in confined valleys. Snowfield landings introduce the challenges of whiteout, surface texture recognition, and landing without visual depth cues. Wind corridor flying teaches crews how to safely transit narrow valleys where turbulence and downdrafts can rapidly change aircraft behavior. Emergency abort procedures are drilled repeatedly, ensuring immediate, disciplined reactions to sudden weather deterioration or power loss.

Week 3 – Advanced Operations raises both altitude and complexity. Crews conduct high-altitude hover landings on exposed ridgelines and confined slopes, demanding precise power control and crew coordination. Low-visibility navigation exercises simulate real-world scenarios involving snowfall, fog, and flat-light conditions, reinforcing reliance on instruments and crew communication. Multi-aircraft coordination introduces formation procedures and airspace management in narrow terrain, while sling-load and supply drop training prepares crews for logistical support of isolated mountain units and emergency relief operations.
Week 4 – Tactical and Rescue Scenarios integrates all previous skills into realistic mission profiles. Night flights test spatial orientation and cockpit discipline in darkness and cold. Simulated evacuations replicate casualty extraction from inaccessible terrain, requiring coordination between pilots, winch operators, and medical personnel. Disaster-response missions model avalanches, stranded civilians, and infrastructure failures, pushing crews to manage stress, time pressure, and complex decision-making. The course culminates in final qualification flights, where each crew must demonstrate full operational competence under winter alpine conditions.
Each phase deliberately builds upon the last, exposing crews to higher altitudes, stronger winds, and more demanding tactical situations. By the end of the course, pilots and aircrew are certified for winter mountain operations, equipped not only with advanced flying skills but also with the situational awareness and teamwork required to safely conduct transport, rescue, and disaster-relief missions in Austria’s harsh alpine environment.

Human Endurance
Within the Winter Flying Training Course of the Austrian Air Force, human endurance is tested as much as aircraft performance. Cold is a constant and unforgiving companion. At altitude, cockpit and cabin temperatures can plunge far below freezing, while wind chill during hover operations or winch work makes conditions even harsher. Crew members operate in thick gloves and visors, balancing fine motor control with the need to remain protected from frostbite, all while continuously scanning steep terrain, snowfields, and weather fronts for hazards. Every movement becomes slower and more deliberate, and even routine checklist tasks demand heightened focus.
Fatigue plays a decisive role in these environments. Long sorties in turbulent air, combined with reduced oxygen levels and the physical strain of cold exposure, steadily erode concentration. Crews must learn to recognize the early signs of exhaustion in themselves and in one another, relying on disciplined cockpit communication and mutual monitoring. Trust between pilot and crew becomes essential: the pilot depends on the crew for obstacle spotting and situational awareness, while the crew relies on the pilot’s precision and judgment to keep the aircraft within narrow performance margins. Winter flying thus becomes a lesson in teamwork under pressure, where survival and mission success depend on collective awareness rather than individual skill alone.
For young aviators, earning winter mountain qualification is more than a technical milestone — it is a rite of passage. What began as classroom theory about meteorology, performance charts, and avalanche risk is transformed into lived experience in biting wind and blinding snow glare. The moment a trainee completes their first high-altitude winter landing or night rescue simulation, they step into the tradition of Austrian military mountain aviation, proving not only that they can fly in extreme conditions, but that they can endure them mentally and physically. This blend of resilience, discipline, and trust defines winter flying training and shapes crews into operators capable of supporting rescue, disaster relief, and military missions in the most demanding alpine environments.








A Capability Forged in Snow

Through this training, the Austrian Air Force preserves a vital national capability: the ability to reach places that are otherwise inaccessible when time is critical and lives are at risk. Against the vast silence of the winter Alps, the helicopters rise as dark silhouettes against snow and cloud — symbols of a nation that has learned to fly where mountains rule the horizon.
