56. Baza Lotnicza – Home of the Polish Army Aviation

Few opportunities are as rewarding for an aviation enthusiast as spending time inside an active military air base, and a recent two-day visit to the 56th Air Base at Latkowo provided a fascinating insight into one of the most important centres of Polish Army Aviation. Home to the legendary Mi-24 Hind and now at the forefront of Poland’s transition to the Boeing AH-64 Apache, Latkowo perfectly captures the meeting of two generations of attack helicopter operations. Over the course of two days, I was able to observe flying operations, explore the flight line, and gain a closer appreciation of the professionalism of the pilots, engineers and support personnel who keep these remarkable aircraft mission ready.

Alongside the iconic Mi-24, the visit also offered the opportunity to see the versatile Mi-2 helicopter, an aircraft that has played a fundamental role in training generations of Polish Army Aviation pilots, as well as witness the early stages of Poland’s ambitious Apache programme. With the leased AH-64D helicopters already based at Latkowo to prepare crews for the arrival of ninety-six AH-64E Apache Guardians, the base is entering one of the most significant periods in its history.

Over the coming weeks, I will be publishing a series of in-depth articles exploring the history of the 56th Air Base, the remarkable service of the Mi-24 and Mi-2 in Polish Army Aviation, and Poland’s transition to the AH-64 Apache. Together, these features will tell the story of a base that continues to play a pivotal role in defending NATO’s eastern flank while preserving a proud rotary-wing heritage spanning more than six decades.

My sincere thanks go to the officers and personnel of the 56th Air Base for their warm welcome, generous hospitality and for making this memorable visit possible. It was a privilege to experience first-hand the dedication and professionalism that continue to define one of Europe’s premier Army Aviation units.
