Mounted above the fuselage, these engines provided a total output sufficient for training, transport and light combat tasks while maintaining a relatively small footprint. The helicopter’s layout was conventional but highly effective: a four-bladed main rotor, a tail rotor mounted on the starboard side of the tail boom, and a cabin capable of carrying up to eight passengers or equivalent cargo.

Among the bases where the Mi-2 played a formative role was Latkowo, home of what would later become the 56th Air Base. While the Mi-24 would eventually define the unit’s attack helicopter capability, it was the Mi-2 that helped establish the foundation of rotary-wing operations at the base. Early training flights, reconnaissance sorties and liaison missions were often conducted using the light helicopter, providing crews with essential experience in low-level navigation, communications and coordination with ground forces.





During the 1990s and early 2000s, the Mi-2 continued to serve in a wide variety of configurations. The most widespread remained the transport and training variants, but the armed versions of the helicopter also retained a limited operational role. The Mi-2URP and Mi-2URP-G configurations, equipped with anti-tank guided missiles, rocket pods and machine guns, provided a lightweight combat capability that could be deployed in specific tactical scenarios.
