Aviano Air Base remains one of the most important American air bases in Europe, and a visit to the northern Italian installation offers a fascinating insight into the United States Air Force’s enduring presence on the continent. Nestled beneath the dramatic backdrop of the Italian Alps, Aviano is home to the 31st Fighter Wing and its two operational F-16 squadrons, the 510th and 555th Fighter Squadrons.
My recent report from my visits to Aviano in December 2021 and more recently in March 2023 takes a closer look at the history of the base, the evolution of its resident fighter units and the role played by the 31st Fighter Wing in supporting US and NATO air operations across Europe and beyond. From the Cold War era through to today’s increasingly demanding operational environment, Aviano has remained closely linked with the development of American air power in Europe.
The report also explores the individual histories of the 510th and 555th Fighter Squadrons, two units with long and distinguished records stretching back well beyond their arrival at Aviano. Their F-16s have become a familiar sight over northern Italy, while their deployments have taken them to numerous exercises and operations alongside allied and partner air forces. Through photographs and historical background, the feature offers a closer look at one of Europe’s most significant fighter bases and the aircraft, people and units that continue to make Aviano an important part of the NATO air power structure.
