Few military aviation events offer quite the combination of atmosphere, history and international participation found at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni’s Friendship Day. Held annually in Japan, the event provides a unique opportunity for the public to experience one of the United States Marine Corps’ most important overseas installations while bringing together American and Japanese military aviation.
My latest report looks back at the 2018 edition of MCAS Iwakuni Friendship Day, held in May 2018, documenting the aircraft and participants that made the event such a memorable occasion. Alongside the impressive flying display and extensive static exhibition, the event demonstrated the close relationship between the United States and Japan and the important role played by Iwakuni within the wider US military presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
The feature also looks at the history of Friendship Day and the development of the event into one of Japan’s major military aviation gatherings. With aircraft from the United States Marine Corps, United States Navy, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and Japan Air Self-Defense Force participating, the 2018 edition provided an impressive cross-section of American and Japanese military aviation.
From fast jets and helicopters to transport and support aircraft, the event offered an exceptional opportunity to photograph aircraft rarely seen together elsewhere. More importantly, Friendship Day provided a fascinating glimpse into the close cooperation between the two nations and the communities surrounding MCAS Iwakuni.
